LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1823) Painting by Ferdinand Waldmüller The painting was commissioned by Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig. Having allowed the painter but one session, Beethoven made such difficulties for him that Waldmüller decided to complete his work from memory. Did the painter mean to revenge himself on Beethoven or did he just happen to immortalize the expression of an ill-humored Beethoven? (Breitkopf & Härtel Archive)
